9— — The Hon. C. Louisson, M.L.C... of Christchurch, and Mrs. Louisson, have arrived at Freimintle, on their wav back to Now Zealand after a visit to" England.

The Hon. W. W. M'Cardle, M.L.C., has been granted three days' leave of absence from his legislative duties on account of ill-health. ~ ' Tho Rev. William Shirer left Wellington on Tuesday to attond the Presbyterian General Assembly in Auckland. He returns on November 17. Tho Rev. R., R. Hovell and Mrs. Hovell, of Napier, are passengers by the Ruapehu, which is due to arrive at Wellington from London on Tuesday noxt.

. Mr. R. Stewart, of Messrs. J. C. Williamson, Ltd., was a passenger from Sydney to Auckland by the Maheno on Sunday last. ' Mr. G. H. Hutton, of tho Auckland branch of tho Bank of New Zealand, has been appointed manager of the newly opened branch of the bank at Ohura.

Tho English mail brings news of tho death of Father Coupe, S.J., M.A., who for some years occupied tho Chair of Logic and General Motaphysics ■ in St. Mary's Hall, Stoneyhurst College. Father Coupe recently undertook an elaborate study of some phases of Christ tianity in tho_ first three centuries. With characteristic thoroughness, he set to work to master the language of tho great. German theologians and philosophers, and lived in Germany as a student.' The strain of lifelong study proved too much for his health, and tho great work which he was contemplating remains unfinished. Ho went to Edinburgh for change of air and rest, but it was too late. Mr. Cecil Webb, of the Ocean Accident Insurance Company, left for Sydney last week to enter into a branch of the business there. On the -ove of his departure he was : presented with' a handsome set of entree dishes, and many kind wishes were expressed' on his behalf. .

Reference was made to the sudden tleatn last week of Mr. Frank Whiteman at Mungaroa, at the meeting of tho Mutt County Council yesterday. On the motion of Mr. M. W. Welch, a vote of sympathy was ■ passed to Mr. John Whiteman (chairman of the council), and to the family of the deceased.

Tho Builders' and Contractors' Federation decided. yesterday to adviso its affiliated associations to support the reappointment of Mr. W. Scott, of Dunedin, as employers' representative on the Arbitration Court, and the re-ap-pointment of Mr. W. Pryor as deputy representative.

Major H. D. Tuson, formerly Adjutant aiid Quartermnstcr-Gonoral of tho Now Zealand. Forces (with the local rank of Colonel), who has now rejoined his regiment (tho Duko of Cornwall's Light Infantry), has boon attached to tho second battalion of the regiment, now at Bloemfontein, South' Africa.
