HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL.

At yesterday's meeting of the Hutt County Council, it was reported that a start had been made with the construction of- wire crates to be used as a protection for the banks of the Hutt .River at the Taita. The hope was expressed that the rising of the crates would prevent the flooding of much valuable land in the district. In connection with this. work, Messrs. Job Mabey and Balls were giving the use of horses and drays, and were also providing some of the material for the new stop-bank. Permission was given for the transfer of a section of land' at York. Bay from the York Bay .Land* Company to Messrs. Brittain and others for the purposes of a water supply. A letter was received offering to let the lease'of Mr. F. W. Smith's metal quarry at Paekakariki ■ for a term of three years.
