A petition has been presented to Parliament by the executive of the Canterbury College Graduates' Association asking that, lecturers on the staffs of the University Colleges should bo included in the benefits of the teachors' superannuation scheme; Among the arguments advanced in favour, of tho request aro that professors and lecturers aro equally deserving of such benefits as teachers and oiviT servants, and considering his social duties, position, and expenses of books, and keopiug abreast of his work, a professor's emoluments are riot so largo as to justify his exclusion.
A good word for tho standards represented in our public buildings and in refutation of light-speaking critics was uttered by Mr. A. Campbell, at the builders' smoko concert last evening.; A short time ago, ho said, a departing Governor passed some very narcastric comments on New Zealand architecture. Peoplo who spoke in this way forgot that only seventy years ago tho architecture, of Now Zealand "cities" consisted of a few Maori wharos. Unthinking peoplo seemed to expect, when they camo here, to 800 public buildings of tho samo standard as it had taken hundreds of years to attain in tho older countries. For the time our Dominion had been established our buildings would compare favourably with those of any city that had'been for tho samo timo in existence in any part of tho world. In our cities tho cheese-paring policy of tho Government in regard to somo of the principal buildings bad a good deal to do with existing imperfections. All largo public buildings should, in tho opinion of the speaker, be thrown open for competition amongst tho architects of tho Dominion. It was impossible to got the best out of any man unless thoro was competition. The Government architects knew that they had only to draw plans and tho whole thing would bo passed. On Friday next, at their sale.vards, Levin, Messrs. Abraham and Williams, Ltd., will offer for sale by public auction a Motion of land situate in Loviu, and containing about four acres. For Chronic Chest Complaints, Woods' Great Peppermint Cure- Is. Od., is*. 6d.—Advt.
