OFFENDERS DEALT WITH. Auckland, November 7. At the Supreme Court, Stanley Soland, a youth, who forged cheques to r>ay the entrance, fees of his horse for country
hack races, was admitted to two years' probation, on tho condition that he docs not go on a racecourse or make a bet. Nora Jivelyn Chapman, for using an instrument for an illegal purpose, was ordered to come up for sentence when called on. His Honour said ho was lenient because without voluntary confession iv conviction would have been impossible. She also showed actual repentance. John Smith and James Arnott, for theft from n dwelling at Gisborne, were each sentenced to two years' imprisonment. Arnott was declared a habitual criminal. MOTUEKA FIRE. ' Nelson, November 7. Rankin and Co.'s grain and produce store and Knapp's bicycle shop, at Motueka, were destroyed by fire this morning. Bankin's main building was saved by a brick wall, and other buildings by the bucket brigade. Knapp saved most of his stock, but his,losses are Heavy^ The insurances were:—Rankin and Co., .£2OO in the New Zealand Office (loss estimated at .£1000); Knapp's bicycle shop, .£100; and tinsmith's shop, .£6O, both in the New Zealand Office. UNHAPPY RAILWAY M"EN. Timaru, November 7. The Timaru branch of the Railway. Servants' Society has carried unanimously a resolution protesting against division by the recognition of the Drivers', Firemen, and Cleaners' Association as a separate organisation. The branch has also sent a copy to the chairman of tho Railways Committee- and tho local member. ' WERE THE FUGITIVES HELPED? Invercargill, November 7. Informations were served to-day against William Alexander Robertson and James Robertson, charging them with assisting escaped prisoners with food, clothing, and money. The case will be heard next Tuesday. EARTHQUAKE., Christchurch, November 7. A sharp shock of earthquake was felt at Kaikoura at G. 23 a.m., the direction being north-east to south-west. GISBORNE OIL CO. Gisborne, November 7. The Gisbomo Oil Co.'s bore has reached 1370 ft. There was a slight.showing of oil at 1330 ft.
