The mail boat Brighton, of the London, Brighton, and South Coast Bailway Company, whilo bound from Newhaven to Dieppe, was seriously damaged by a collision with the five-masted ship Preussen, of Hamburg (the world's largest eailer), bound for A T alparaiso. The collision took place off Beachy Head. The Preussen, with a crew of thirty, was afterwards wrecked at Dover. A gale with the heavy seas running impeded the lifeboat, although the coastguard made heroic efforts to throw a rocket apparatus aboard. The attempts at rescue are continuing. The Preussen is of 5081 tons gross and was built at Hamburg in 1902. The Brighton, 1129 tons gross, is a triple-screw turbine boat, and was built in 1903.
