HORSE-BREEDING.
-« THE NEW BRITISH SCHEME. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. London, November 4. The "Morning Post," dealing with "tho Imperial aspect of tho Government's horse-breeding scheme, upon which £40,000 is to bo spent annually, states that Australia produces some of the finest horses in the world. Britain, adds the "Post," relies upon Australia to supply tho Homo deficiency. Discussing the Government's horsebreeding scheme, the "Daily Mail" in August said:— "The Board of Agriculture have already proposed to register 500 stallions and 25,000 mares suitable for breeding Army horses, with the offer of purchasing the foals on or before becoming three years old. It is a very wise step to use the Master of Hounds Organisation. As many as sixty-seven masters of foxhounds responding to tho scheme worked and suggested by Mr. Staploton, a Lincolnshire yeoman, have promised to offer their services as a centre of registration. Breeders aro asked to communicate witli the hunts; and it is hoped in this way that our horses yrill be located and ,a universal breeding organisation will be set afoot at no cost whatever. . "What the organisation ask is that they shall be told exactly what stamp of horse is required, and that if tho animal is up to that standard it shall be taken as. a foal and a retaining fee be advanced yearly till it is taken away by the Government at three years old. Given a certain market and a knowledge of what the market—in this case the nation—wants, our breeders will breed the horses in plenty with no eirort or expenditure on the part of the Government."
