THE CURTAIN AND THE CANDLE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.! Napier, November 6. ' On Saturday niglit a fire broke out in a ten-roomed house in Brewster Street owned by Mr. E. W. Knowles and occupied by Mr. R. W. Goldsmith. Tile blaze started in the upper story, and was caused bv a curtain being blown against a lighted "candle. The excellent work of the fire brigade saved the lower portion of the building. The furniture was insured-for £200 aad the house, which is valued at £650. for £450 in the United Office. BAKER'S PREMISES BURNED DOWN. . ' \ Dunetiin, November 6. At an early hour yesterday morning a fire broke but in the premises of H. Laing, baker, Outram. When discovered the fire had a good hold, and as there was no brigade, it was impossible to save the buildings which were totally destroyed. These included a shop, bakehouse, stables, and'a dwelling of six rooms. A bucket brigade was instrumental in saving the Drill Hall adjoining which caught fire two or three times. Mr. Laing's buildings were insured for £300, and the furniture and fittings for £100 in the Commercial Union Office. Most of the furniture was saved.
