The officers of the steamer Spithead, which Arrived from San Francisco and tho Islands at Auckland on Thursday, report that tho volcano on Savan Island is still very active (states tho "New Zealand Herald"). On the evenin" of October 19 the burning volcano, which was fully 70 miles distant, could bo plainly seon from the steamer. Tho sea and sky were brilliantly lighted up, and the flames appeared to rise to a groat height. At first the officers thought it must bo a native, village on fire ' Later, when tho steamer was within about twelve miles of tho volcano, tho sight was a magniacont one.
