Thore died at Tauranga, on Monday last, at the ago of 88 years, Mr. Robert Clarke Shearman, who was for many years a member of the New Zealand Police. Force. Born in the Old Conntry, ho emigrated to Australia in tho "gold rush" days. On arriving at Melbourne, Mr. Shearman joined the Victorian police, and, aftor some years in this service, he was appointed Commissioner of Police, under tho Canterbury Provincial Government. On the abolition of tho provinces, Mr. Shearman was appointed, by tho General Go\ rernmont, Superintendent of Police in tho North Island. As a result of retrenchment by tho Government of the day, Mr._ Shearman was reduced to the rank of inspector in charge of the' Wellington, district'. This position *e retained until 1887, when ho was transferred to Auckland. Retiring on compensation twelve or oightoon months later, ho commenced business in Wellington as a commission agent: A year or two later ho took up land at Tauranga, and continued to livo in that district until bis death. Mr. Shearman is survived by a widow and a family of four sons and two daughters.
