Reuter's Agency states that tho Government official banquet to-night to welcomo Messrs. l'isher (Australian Prime Minister), Lemieux (Canadian Postmaster-Geuoral), and Fowlds (New Zealand Minister, for 1 Education), was a notable gathering, the guests including Major-General Scobe'll, .four administrators, senators, membors of the Assembly, moiubers of tho National Convention.
Mr. Sauor, Union Minister for Railways and Harbours, presided in tho absence of General Botha (Primo Minister), who was indisposed. . , Mr. Sauer proposed tho toast "Our Guests." Ho pointed out that the experience of Canada and Australia had largely helped tho national conventionors in their work of drafting tho Constitution. Ho ascribed tho progress of South Africa, first, to the character of tho people, and, secondly to tho early and adequate application of liberal principles by tho Imperial Governient. Dr. Jameson (Leader of tho Opposition) in supporting the toast, hoped they might bo able to repay their debt to Australia and Canada by tho encouragement of those countries to advance to comploto union through the success of South Africa. Mr. Fisher, in replying, referred to tlio wonder of a people who had been at strife a few years since being able, by tho enlightened policy of tho Imperial Government, sanctioned by British subjects in all parts of tho world, to form the Union.
