- S.S. MAORI A FULL SHIP. ' "Full _ ship"- were the dismal !■ words that foil on the ears of a number of intending passengers by the Maori to last evetiing, for about ten 'minutes before the advertised time , of departure the Customs officials were compelled to turn: back many "sports" who had their "fancies" for the racing carnival at' Christchurch. Possibly when the results come through, these disappointed Oilea will pour blessings on the Leads .of tho "heartless", officials who stopped-their'going'.--'The crowd which assembled .to witness the 589 passengers depart must havo numbered something like 1600, and the wharf was black with the. great, assemblage. There ■was'jostling aiid pushing, and countless frantic endeavours to' work a passage towards the gangway,: to say nothing of the great babel of more or loss excited voices. As the big lighted steamer pulled slowly olit from tho wharf everyone seemed to-bo calling out the same thing, to everybody, else: ' 'Well, goodbye, and see that you back the winner of the Cup 1"
