The. first, day was not a ' but, first thing ihis morning, the cattle, : horses, .thj.v sheep.-and ,the dogs were taken on to the ground, and at nine o'clock judging was 'commenced..; Some of ■ the sections were, larger and. the judges' -.work Tan on until.afternoon.' There was •-a big. crowd •in attendance during the afternoon, but it is,doubtful if there.is as great a' crowd -as was present last year. There did not .seem to,be the same life . about the grounds, but as there is still; a day .to. go there.is yet .time for. record .breaking.'- *'■ ■ \ ' .... , ,■ •The Premier, who had been invited to '. be'present'at the show,, telegraphed .that he:could not attend, but hoped.that the Minister 'for. numerous firsts'and seconds.' E. Bremer, of Wavcrlev, won the ram championship, and a ran/exhibited by Slack Bros, was selected as reserve. Competition was poor, numerically speaking; in Border Lcicesters. . Mr. Joseph Dowthwaite, of I'ordell, scored all the firsts and the ewe championship. ~; ... Shropshire Downs, Some-beautiful animals of .the Shropshire breed'were* penned, and; the classes were- filled by finer sheep than have ever been-.seen at Palmersfon before. There was no ewe championship-awarded, out it is understood that the judge had decided to bestow the honour on a ewe shown byMr. H. D.. Vavasour, of Blenheim, but found that any sheep under 18 months old was ineligible to wear, the red ribbon. •Mr; Vavasour's ewe was .a.beautiful <animal: In- 1008 the-Marlborough, breeder purchased at the Royal' Show at Newcastle, England, the first prize yearling ram, and the first prize pen of yearling ewes. The ewe above referred to is ono of the. progeny of..the imported sheep, and-is.an, almost perfect specimen. The ram championship was ■ awarded to an; entry by Mr. Peter Cooper, of Masterton, and a ram ; of Mr. Vavasour s was reserve champion.. Island sheep were not successful in wresting the honour from the northerners. . Short was the chief competitor from this end, The draught-horse championship went to Mr. Short's, • Royal-; Treasure, whose only opponent in his class was Mr. T. Edlin's King of the Saxons. Dairy Cattle and. Fats. . r •There' were'only small entries';in the dairy, cuttle classes; and most of : the cattle came'from Jersey herds. ■ S. E. F. .Moore,, the:breeder of the renowned Kai Iwi Herefords," and T. A. Perry. . :, r :' Romney Marsh. ■ v /;■''.; The first regret which .one,, experiences in looking, along the Kpmney pens .is that there arc no entries from the famous Short- shid. However,' . the quality, of sheep penned is. considered by .the authorities to' be particularly good, and nothing better'was'wished, for than the rams of Perry, of Masterton, whose-sheep were got up well, and showed exceptional quality. The ram championship, was. won by one of Sir. Perry's entries in the aged class. Mr. H. Tanker, of Longburn, has a fine collection of ewes of the Romney ; kind which made practically a clean sweep .of the ewe ■classes, while Mr. Douglas G. I'orlong, of '" Bunnytkorpc, placed on exhibition several • very fine Komneys, and :was awarded a lerti'ficate of merit; ■•' Leicesters. ''.;..•.
