".AN INTERESTING COMPETITION. The Wellington Fruit Brokers' Association, ifhich includes the" , firms of Messrs. Griffiths and Co., Ltd., Laery and Co., Ltd., George Thomas and Co., Thompson Bros., Ltd., and Townsend and Paul, Ltd., have notified the secretary of the Hutt Horticultural Society of their intention to donate a valuable trophy for competition as a prize for the best-kept market garden in tho Lower Hutt Valley. The trophy, to bo won three times in succession or at intervals, is accompanied by a further monetary donation to be utilised in tho purchase of a suitable prise, to be won outright each season. Mr, T. W. Ivirk, Director of Orchards, has promised to ■ act as one of the throe'oudges, and it has been arranged that the judging shall lie by points as follows-.—(a) General arrangement or lay-out i (l>) Condition of. soil . (cultivation); (c) drainage, etc.; (d) knon-ledgo of manuring required by each crop, as evidenced by applications made; (e) condition of crops as to health and means taken to control disease and pests; (f) commercial value of crop groivn; (j) consideration to be given in reference to I the quality of land utilised. The judges will visit the district four times during, the year, at the end of which a full report will be nifide out and the points awarded at eacli visit set out. It is proposed that the Competition shall stait from the beginning of next year, entries closing on January 31, 1911, and prices awarded at the autumn show of the Hutt Society in 1912. Considor'able interest is being evinced generally by tho farmers of tho Hutt Valley, and there is every probability that-the-.com-petitors will be numerous and tho competition keen.
