Allan Thomson, one of the Rhodes scholars '■'. from New' Zealand, who intended accompanying the Antarctic expedition as geologist with the Western party, and who is a son of Mr. G. M, Thomson, M.P., has informed Captain Scott that on account of ill-health he will not be. able to go with the expedition. Captain Scott js at present in communication with the Government on the .subject of the app.ointment. of someone to take Mr. Thomson's place, but the rianio' of the scientist who will do so is)hot yet known. It is understood that.he will be probably a gentleman who has had previous experience of geological work in the Antarctic.
