SUBURBAN RAILWAY SERVICE.

A MINISTERIAL STATEMENT. , A request for an improved service on the suburban portion of the Manawatu iino was recently made by Mr. • Field, 41.P. for Otakj, to the Government. In the House of Representatives yesterday, the Hon. J. A. Millar said that tho 11.15 p.m. train to Paekakariki is run for the purpose of affording business people, engaged in the town an. opportunity of going into the country when their business is finished. Experience has shown that country residents who, visit town return by" the 4.15 p.m._ train, which enables them to reach their homes in a reasonable time. In dealing with railway traffic, it hae been clearly proved that settlers accompanied by their children, who come to town on Saturday mornings, are always anxious to leave for home by the first available afternoon train. The running of the 6.25 p.m. train on 1 Saturdays bsyond Johnsonville, and the continuation of the 11 p.m. train, would necessitate an additional train being put on, involving fifty-three miles: of extra running, at an expenditure which the traffic does not justify.
