His Excellency the Governor gave a private dinner party at "Elmwood," Uhristchurcii, last night. There were present Bishop Julius and Mrs. Julius, liishop Grimes, Lady Bowen, Mr.' and Mrs. Mt. and Mrs. G. E. Rhodes, i\lr. and 'Mrs. J. D. Hall, Mr. and, Mrs. G. E. ■ Gould, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. N. Grigg, Miss Staploton Cotton, Captain Hamilton, Captain Shannon, and Captain Maitland. To-day Lord Islington will visit Mr. J. C. N. Grigg, at Ashburton. He will go to Ashlurton Show. To-morrow he will return to Christchurch, and, with Lady Islington, will attend a garden party given _ by the Victoria League.—Press Association.

Included among tho passengers to arrive from the south this morning by the Maori are the - Hons. E.. ,0. J. Stevens, J. Anstey, and John Barr, Jl.L.C.'s.

Mr. David. Crewe, of Pahiatua, intends shortly to visit Great Britain.

The Rev. 3?. Faulkos, of the Methodist Church, is the passengers for Auckland who arrived from England by the Arawa yesterday.

Mr. G. H. P. Rolle'ston, British Trade Commissioner, will visit Great Britain on duty in January next. He will be absent from the Dominion about five months. During' Mr.' Rolleston's absence the routine of his office will be carried on as usual, Mr. 0. S. Watkiils, of Wellington, acting in an aidvisory capaoity.

Mr. P. C. Freeth has acquired the "Hutt and Petone Chronicle," and will assume control from to-day.

Among the passengers arriving from England by the Arawa yesterday was Dr. A. M'Arthur, S.M., who has been on a holiday trip for several months. During that time, he visited England, Scotland, Ireland, and also Paris, anil 'l'Oports that he found hospitality on all sides. Though glad to return to the Dominion, Dr. . ul'Arthur had an ni-t-cresting and enjoyable holiday, and he reached here yesterday morning in the best of health.
