DENATURED ALCOHOL. . ,British manufacturers of industrial pre. parations containing alcohol were to have held a national conference in London recently to discuss measures for securing greater facilities for the manufacture and storage of such spirits in bond. It is complained that manufacturers in Great Britain are seriously handicapped in competition with ,their Continental rivals by being compelled ,to pay ,thb duty on; all spirits before' the process of manufacture is entered upon, the manufacturer having thus *.c lie out of his capital, until the manufactured article passes into tho hands of 'the distributors,- which practically means into consumption. In Germany manufacturers are granted six months for the payment of excise duty on alcohol, on. proper security being given, while in Austria a similar respite of from.four months to two years is granted. So far as Con- | tinental competitors—who are naturally • those most seriously considered by British manufacturers—are concerned, it may be mentioned that during the last ten years the consumption of denatured spirit has increased in France by 360 per cent, to 13,750,000 gallons, while in Germany it has increased from 21,823,000 gallons in 1900, to 32,673,000 gallons in the last financial year, having been in the interim as high L*a iLflaniffi) callous. *"■ U"» United Kine.

dom, on the other hand, the consumption of industrial alcohol during the last financial year for which figures arc available amounted to only 6,280,000 gallons, whioh compares with 4,984,000 gallons in 1399-1900. ' CUSTOMS AND BEEF, DUTY. Customs revenue collected at tho port of. Wellington yesterday amounted to £2044 lis. 7d. The net Customs receipts for the month of October totalled £63,615 15s. 7d., as compared with £57,556 ss. 7d. for the corresponding month of 1909. Tho beer duty collected last month was £1156 Is. 6d., as against' £1101 Is. in October, 1909. OCTOBER EXPORT FIGURES. Kapler,' October 31. Interviewed on the wool for the coming I season, Sir. J. G. Herdman, .manager for 1 Messrs. Dalgety and Company, • said:—"As i far ; as the quality is concerned, it. is not 'quite up to that of last year. It seems to be shorter iu staple, and not in such; j jo.od order generally. It is very light in grease for this time of tho 'year, and much of it is inclined to be wasty. As regards prices, unless there is ho change in tho American market, wo need not expect any competition from that source. iowever, Americans might- come into the market any day, but. until they do, growers of wool suitable for America must face lower prices than those obtaining last year. Wool suitable for the Continent and Bradford should sell well —perhaps not quite ■up to last year's rates, but still at good prices. There will be. more competition than .was the case last year as a number of new buyers are coming from Bradford and the - Continent. From all appearances, the total catalogues should even exceed those, of last year, which constituted a. record for Napier sales. Clips from • growers who have never before sold in the local market will be I sent in this season, and at least' 6000. bales (double tho quantity offered- at tho first sale last season) will be submitted on November 10—the date of the first of the 1910-11 series.
