NAPIER MUNICIPAL TRAMS.

PAYING:' THE WAT. •"'■':■ ,A deputation, representing, the NapieSi Borough Council, waited on the Hon. jJ A. Millar yesterday morning. It was], introduced by Mr..-J. Vigor Brown, M.fi.; Councillor "G. Nelson, on behalf of thai deputation, asked the Minister to take* into consideration the advisablencss o£) . acquiring a further area of land adjbinind the railway'station, in order to increase* the space available, for .street traffic, in; view of the proposed tram. service. -It; had been suggested alternatively to ac-?' quire the land immediately adjoining thei present station that the railway • might be shifted further to, the south; on. toi a larger area of land already belonging! to the Railway Department. 'This would.) only mean the' acquisition -of-a small, area of private property" adjoining, to. give ample accommodation. The deputation also raised a. point in regard to; the shifting of the railway line wher» it crosses and recrosses Wellesley Road, at a point where it is proposed to locatetho power station and car sheds in connection with the municipal trains.. The Minister said he had to remember that he was looking after the interests of the public of, New Zealand; whilst the deputation had only to look to tho interests of the people of Napier. If the line were removed, the council would have ta pay' the expense involved, and he could adS that it would not bo moved unless the straightening was-going' to benefit" the railways. A report would' be made on the whole scheme. The Department might do something with'.' the ■ land, although he did not know thac they required it now. However, it might. be desirable to acquire it, in view of, future development's. He would have a full report prepared, and let the depur tation know the result.
