SELF=DENIAL WEEK.

ARMY'S ANNUAL CRUSADE. NORTH BEATS SOUTH ISLAND. GEAND TOTAL, ,£13,460. The Salvation Army barracks in Vivian Street were full to the doors last evening, when Col. Knight, officer commanding the North Island district, made known the figures in connection with the recent week of self-denial. A novel method of displaying the figures from the different towns was adopted. Each place was represented by a lantern, slide, on which appeared the amount, embodied in some clever sketch or comic picture, with an apt allusion here and there to fit the particular town under notice. Apart from the returns the slides gave no end of amusement. These were supplemented by a series of views of New Zealand scenery, loaned by a Government Department, which served to vary the interest. Strange as it may seem,. the palm, as far as individual towns are concerned, was carried off by Gisborne, which contributed no less a sum than .£950, an increase of £249 on its last year's figures. Wellington was next on tho list with .£9Ol, as against £1000 last year. Then came Auckland with £550, £10 less than last year. The complete figures, with a comparison with those of last year, are appended :—
