The late Mr. C. E. Dowsett, whose death was announced in The Dominion of October 27, was an old resident of 53 years' standing in New Zealand. For the last forty-five years he has resided continuously in Wellington, only once leaving that city (on a short visit to Nelson). The lato Mr. Dowsett, besides leaving a widow, has also left four sons and one daughter and numerous grandchildren. Mr. C. Dowsett, of Paraparaumu, is a son, and Mrs. Tilly, Packakariki, Mrs. Orerend, Kaiwarra, Mrs. Freeman, Mrs. Wilson, and Mrs. Bills, Otaki, are sisters, and there is one brother, Mr. F. Dowsett, Newman. The deceased gentleman, who was widely known and respected, was in his seventy-third year. Colonel A. W. Robin, C.8., Chief of the General Staff, is at present on an official visit to Auckland. Among other things, he will inspect the Auckland Infantry Battalion, which has gone into camp for a seven-days' course of instruction. The Auckland Battalion has been the,first in New Zealand to inaugurate battalion training camps, under the new regime. Mr. E. W. Richards, Town Clerk, of Dunedin, and Mr. E. Stark, city electrical ongincer, have resigned. It is understood the former has received an appointment in Sydney, beginning in March, and that Mr. Stark takes officii under the wtterpower scheme of the Government,—Press Association The King's police medal has been received by the Governor of New South Wales for presentation to Senior-Constable Gates, formerly of New Zealand, in recognition of his bravery in an encounter with a desperado named Crook, who had broken into a house at North Sydney and shot the owner, Mr. Sinclair, when the latter grappled with him. The details of this event, which took place last year, will be well remembered. A full parade is to be held for the occasion on a date to be fixed. Dr. W. H. Solfe, ex-Governor of Samoa, and Mrs. Solfe, left for Vancouver on the last trip of the Makura. Mr. Robt. Triggs, at one time chief clerk in the locomotive superintendent's branch of the New Zealand Railways and lately chief accountant of Western Australian Railways, has been ' appointed chief accountant of the Central Commonwealth Post and Telegraph Department with headquarters at Melbourne. He secured the position in open competition. The chief accountancy is understood to be a new position created as a result of the report of the recent commission which inquired into Commonwealth postal matters. Mr. E. W. Relph, manager of the Now Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Association (Christchurch), arrived from the south on' Sunday. Mr. A. R. Grierson was the recipient of a presentation from the staff of the Bank of Australasia (Auckland) on severing his connection with the bank. The manager (Mr. J. D. Grieg), in making the presentation, referred to the faithful manner in which Mr. Grierson had carried out his duties during the 15.years he had spent in the bank's service. Mr. D. Murdock, manager of the Napier branch of the Westport Coal Company, left Wellington for Napier by tho Tarawera last evening.
