RETIREMENT OF DR. JAMES MACGREGOR.
' "A KING AMONG PREACHERS." OL T)l ?, J*"'- Dr. .Tames MacGregor, of ofc. Gutlibert's Church, Edinburglij is ministry (says the' British Weekly ), Ou the strength or years ana services Dr. MacGregor may "o" clanu his rest, but his disappearance from the.-Scottish pulpit, iii which no has been so'long pre-emineut, ,is a distinct bereavement, and will be deeply regretted by. tho Church and by the nation. For half a century Dr. MacGregor-has maintained a niost po-. tent and individual. ministry. Others may have been more ornate,.or more learned, or more philosophical, but none has surpassed him in ireshness,.in earnestness, in striking directness of forde, and m unbroken acceptance and popularity. A. K. H. B. distinguished between two classes of popular preachers those'who fill churches and those who crowd churches, and he pointed out Dr. MacGregor as chief. among' tho latter. But Dr. MacGregor has much higher claims to regard than, the claim of being able to attract a crowd. He' has, been m the Scottish ministry, very much what Father Stanton has been in the ministry of vthe Church of' England- — all things a Proclaimed He has preached with Celtic fire and with Christian passion the truth as' he lias round it in the pages of the New Testament,: fearing nothing, apologising for nothing, and holding nothing back. Dr.. MacGregor litis' abstained from authorship, and on, this account is not "so well known outsido. of Scotland- - as isome 1 others, but. his brethren of all Churches • acknowledge 'him'as' a king among rpreachers. • ' 7 : • .-••
