BATHING COSTUMES.

' Sir,— I Tho above , subject is . being much discussed just now. and it would seem likely'that a still further restriction may bo placed Upon the bathers on our beaches. Surely our ideas of propriety are becoming sadly warped. Doctors assure lis, Olid, indeed, it is a matter of common experience, that the 'free-ploy.'of'sun,and. air on the ; skin is. highly conduciv'o to good health, while all , sens! bio people aro agreed that when bathing the less,, worn the better, provided that, decency is secured. And for this purpose I maintain that trunks of stout dark-coloured material,, and similar in form to the nether garment of tho Canadian 1 "bathing" costumo, are' amply sufficient for our men and boys. But the wearing of tlioso by all over tho age, say, of 12 years should bo strictly enforced on our public beaches.- Let us try to cultivate the old idea that tho human body is God's masterpiece in beauty of form. This will tend to create in our youth's a desire to develop their bodies and keep them puroj that'they may bo fit to meet tho gaze of a public trained to recogniso beauty in human sliapo. We shall thus do much more to securo truo morality among our young people, than by teaching tbcm that their bodies tiro to bo hidden away lest some prurient eye should be offended, and wo shall not in future find it necessary to invoke the aid of a policeman because somo lads appoar on a seaside Toad "with nothing on but bathing trunks." Artificiality in almost, everything is one of the curses, of our times* Let us try to riso abovo it in this matter. Hoping that'others will tako the matter up.—l am, etc., ONLOOKER, Wellington, Octobor 24, 1910.
