SWIMMING ASSOCIATION.

WELLINGTON CENTRE. . The annual meeting of the Wellington Centra of the New Zealand < Amateur Swimming Association was held . last Aight. Mr. D. Joslin presided, and there was a good attendance of' delegates.. The annual report and balance r sheet were adopted. In : ' tho annual report the ' committee said: "We are pleased to be',able to state' that swimming during 'last: season progressed considerably, as throughout the summer delightful weather prevailed, the various' clubs held their usual carnivals, and each gathering :\vas vory successful. A new departure in the way. of carnivals was the Thorndon Club's gathering,' which was held at night-time, and. proved most, satisfactory for the competitors, as well as for the spectators, being splendidly conduoted. Owingto .difficulty experienced' in obtaining suitable dates, tho centre was unable to hold its annual carnival, the championship'events being decided at various club carnivals. The school championships were duly held,',and provided- some very interesting racing. The conference of delegates took place at Auckland in conjunction with the championships, tho Wellington delegates putting forward a suggestion to the counoil that a shield be provided for competition between .the different centres at championship meetings. This . was duly, approved by ; the conference, but upon being submitted to the council was entirely ignored. This matter, however, is not to bo allowed' to drop. Under instructions / from -headquarters a branch of the Koyal Life' Saving Society was formed to administer this department. Mr. W\ Henry, the founder and present secretary of tho Royal Life Saving Society, the, greatest authority of the present day on life saving work, will bo paying a visit to the Dominion. Wo look forward this season to holding the New Zealand championship at Wellington, and with this object in view tho City Counoil have kindly acceded to the centre's request, and . have made the alterations'neoessary for tho To Aro Baths' courso to comply, with the requirements. The thanks of the centre are due to Messrs. A. W. Smith and T. Shiolds for, their valuable services in connection with the schoolboys' profloienoy certificates. Mr. Shields, in addition, deserves special mention for his valuable work in teaching the young on Wednesday afternoons, Tho balanco-sheot showed that there was a cash balance of *£27 18s. 4d., while the assets were in a sound' condition. Mr. H. W. Dyson moved: "That in view of the forming of a centre of the N.Z.A.S.A. in tho Nelson district, this contre will hand over tho sum of <£G to the aforesaid Nelson Centre as tho share of tho two clubs (Nolson and Waimca) from tho humane branch for a nucleus of a Humane and Life Saving Fund." It was decided that before dealing with the matter that a letter be written to headquarters asking what had been done in similar previous cases.
