Vite, 7st. : ' , " : NOTES ON THE R \CING ' ®T Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) .' ' Masterton, October, 28. ..- Tho Masterton Club had a very successful ■ first day, the. weather - being perfect. The rain, which fell overnight,' did not affect the going. Several fast times were ■ recorded, and ■; Iranui, the Cup; winner, registered the same timo as Lady; Medallist did in ... last< year's race. R. Hatch, on Iranui and First .Consul,, rodo splendid races, especially 'in the list event, in which ho saved his horse for' a final run and got up in time to win by a neck. Rauparaha was unlucky not to win the Cup, as he met. with some interference' in the straight, and after recovering himsolf his rider took matters too easily. . There were two scratchings in the Hack Hurdles, Gaelic and Sylvia Maid being withdrawn. Te Ru. despite his winning sequence, ivas neglected on the machine, while his-; stable companion, Howler, was made favourite. However, tho supposed good thing did not eventuate,* as Sleacombe le-d throughout, and though tackled by To Ru in the straight lie easily;/stalled him off. Howler jumped badly. To Ru was never near the leaders until too late. Despite his big burden of 9st., the Hawlie's Bay-owned Tina Toa was made favourite in tho Flying Hack Handicap. He began first, but was soon chopped out, and sent back to the middle ol the big field. At the straight, Rill ajid Miss Sylvia were leading, but when ho got clear. Tina Toa put in a strong run and cut down all but Rill. Leahora was last to and across the bottom she was giving the field a big itart, but she then put in a marvellous

run, and was unlucky to get beaten, for in the straight sho was blocked when trying to got through. One wellbacked horse was not allowed to do his best in this event, i

Sir Antrim, with W. Young in tho saddle, was supposed to bo a good thing iu tho Cup, but ho was rather badly beat-en into thjrd place. Rauparaha was the unlucky horse, as ho I appeared to bo winniig easily, but his ruler took matters jtoo coolly, and Iranui (R. Hatch) just got up in time to win, after securing a lucky run on tho' rails. Llanwern fed for sis furlongs, when' he gave way to the favourite. Merrivoma rail badly, and so did Mataari. j The Ro/er, who hails from Foxton, was made'favourite in the Maiden Race, but lie wis quite easilyjdisposed of, and nover reiched the front.' Longwood began smirtly, and led throughout,. Tho tield ws's a very weak one, and nothing stood <iut.: ( Morrie Fly (fell on his nose across/-the bottom, or Ihe would have .been amongst the place-getters. . Th 6 Bracelet field was reduced by tho/withdrawal of' Sylvia -Maid, . Te Utvatu, and Lord Kilcheran. Strathmc/ra was best backed,' and, he won coiifortaliiy, but had Himitansri been • jidenwith anything like equal judgment, he: would, have been closer up. .We of , the others were .ever in win? /ning positions, but several of theni may be expected to show up better to-day.

Longstep, who had shown up so well at Treiitham, was always most in demand for the Dash Hack, while good support came for Kiltie Lass, Lady Dons, and Golden Ago The favourite quickly took charge, and, after stalling off challenges by Golden Age and Lares,. Traill had,to sit down and ride .him* very-hard to beat Lady Doris, who got away badly.: .:

Full Rate and Dervish badly bekt the starter in the Publicans' Handicap, and the former, won very easily. Penza would probably have reversed positions with him had she got away on anything like, even terms.Clemora and Ballyshannon were both well backed, but neither got out of tho ruck. Ballyshannon looked very empty, and bore the appearance of i having done badly since.leaving Trentham. - ; ■ Opinions were very evenly divided as to trie merits of Captain Bell and .First Consul in the concluding event, and •there was very little between them. on the machine.' - First Consul went down beautifully . in his preliminary, and gained many ■ friends in consequence. The start was a good one, and Hno favourite 1 took up the running, with' Vitc and Mediterranean next.. Across: the bottom Awiia took charge, and tho favourite fell back into fourth place. In the straight Captain Bell came through and tackled Awlia,'but -the ; latter 1 shook ■ him off., Hatch .then brought .'First Consul along, and with a beautifullytimed run scored by' a neck. Captam Bell was' a length away,-and then came Mediterranean. . SECOND' DAY'S; ACCEPTANCES. '.(By Telegraph;— Press Association.)
