In tho Opera ' House to-night patrons will see tho first representation of Messrs. Hamilton, Plimmer, aud Dcnuistou's' new play. .Mr. Harry Plimmer will play "The Mysterious Stranger," Miss I.izettc Parkes "btasia," Mrs. Robert- lirough "Mrs. Shape," aud Mr. , Reynolds . Denniston '■"Major Tompkins," all the other characters being in the hands of well-known artists. The box plan is filling well, and doubtless :wheii tlio curtain is taken up to-night, there will bo a very large-nu-dience. The company is to arrive to-day i'rbin Palmerston North, where, they appeared for two- nights, and filled the theatre on both occasions. This has been tlio ■ jiightly occurrence over since they landed in tho Dominion some tlirco or four weeks ago.- "Who is lie?" is becoming --a-'."question' that is still, unsettled. Jerome K. Jeromo had his own idea as to what ho-intended, but. was so impressed with the character after ho had created it, that even he "thought." ' The box plan is filling at Holliday's, and day sales may be purchased after niuo o'clock this morning at Christeson's. "SWEET NELL 'OF OLD .DRURY.". 1 Tho final' performance of "Sweet Nell, of Old Drury" was given at: tho Opera House -last- night, before a ' large . and enthusiastic audience. The.piece was, as usual, admirably mounted and costumed. Miss Nellie Stewart as Nell Gwynne was once more a great success, and was accorded an excellent reception. The other roles were also . well played, notably those filled by Messrs.. Hareourt Beatty and Gaston Morvalc. THEATRE ROYAL. Thero was a good house at the Theatre Royal last night,. and from beginning to end of the performance tho -audieuco ursnifestod their appreciation, of the pror gramme which Fuller's Vaudeville Company, is. presenting this week. The ieaturo ,of- the entertainment. .was the musical -burlesque.;.turri of Graham and Gray, tho American duo,, who continue to delight tho audionce, and have to answer a number of encores each evening. The New Zealand' soprano,' Miss Beryl Gilman, and tho Two Rosebuds, song and dance artists, were responsiblo for popular contributions,. whilo Scott Gibson, the Apollo Brothers, Fred Ricks, and other artists, found favour for their various items. ■■.''",. v HIS MAJESTY'S. As far as a'large •section of theatregoers is. concerned, -animated pictures have no doubt come-to stay. If they; are welt selected, their novelty'and variety afford a very pleasant evening, and they also constitute a very instructive form of amusement. The programme submitted at His Majesty's last evening was followed throughout by a highly-appreciative audience, and the fact that Tiiero was only standing-room at 8. o'clock sufficiently indicates the nature of'the patronage accorded. It is difficult to single out any particular film,-.'but a travel picture, "Scenes in British India," gave many and striking glimpses of life in • our- great Indian Empire, teeming with (strange people. , "John Graham's Gold" was a splendid dramatic story,'splondidly'acted, and well cenccived, dealing with a girl's self-sacrifice. She becomes the unwilling bride of a miserly, old money-lender, in order to pay her mother's debts. "The Italian Plying Artillery" was a thrilling •illustration : of how. the Italian artillery are trained. Feats of horsemanship wore performed', during the manoeuvres . that would hnvo dono credit to any sroughridors. In the comic section, "How Jones Won the Champion,"- was an exceedingly diverting subject, in 'which.'- there are many smashes, and some fine trick cycling. "West's Animated Gazette" depicts subjects of topical nature, ' including -the ■arrival.. ;of the Dutch squadron at. Sydney arid -Melbourne, .andtho Labour Day : procession in Auckland, : 1910. An excellent picture is the parade of the Canadian" HiUes.bef.bro the Lord Mayor of London.. Lovers, of military pictures will'appreciate the'film showing tho manoeuvres .of Italian Light. Horse Artillery—this graphically, illustrates tho methods iof this regiment for getting ovor'both difficult and dangerous country. The-persecutions of the early""Christians, combined with a pathetic love- story, is the subject of a .very long dramatic film of ihigli merit. "Ito* tho Beggar Boy," is a story of Japan, well staged in ■. very picturesque Japanese scenery. "Picturesque Venice" is set forth in a series of views typical -.'of'..that .city.' Some of tho canal scenes, especially thoso in. which tho Venetian -firemen took a, prominent part were greatly applauded., Gomic subjects, are...well ..distributed throughout the programme, "flow Jones Won . tho Championship," "Foolshead in tho Lions' Cage," and others provoked, hearty laughter.., -...-' ' STAR PICTURES. ■ St. .. Thomas's;i Hall,, Newtown, was crowded last night, when.tho programmo of tho Star Pictures for. this week was again screened. The,various films; which covor a.large; field of interest, mot.with hearty, approval, especially the pictures of "Louts Between Champion Wrestlers" [ and the '."Richmond Railway Disaster." All the items are of a character which make the show a very, enjoyable one
"INDOOR GARDEN FETE. A rather, novel entertainment, •which takes the form of an indoor garden fete, will be held- in the "Wesley Hall, Taranaki Street, this and to-morrow evenings, the proceeds.of which are to be devoted to the. Mission Fund. Contributors to the programme this evening; will ■ include-: MissoS'E. and 11. Chapman,. A. Baker, 51. Flux, V.. Mueller', and Wright, and Messrs. IL/Phipps, G. Meikle, and H.'B. Cooper. The programme will conclude with- a comedietta entitled "Distinguished Visitors." ■ A'splondid programme has also been arranged for to-morrow evening.
The assembly hall at' the Y.M.C.A., buildings last night presented •an animated sight, the occasion being the residents' social evening. .. Mrs. J. W. V. Fossotte',"-president of the Ladies' Auxiliary, received the visitors.' Ono of the sights of the'- evening 'was the. gymnasium, where, under tho leadership- of Miv -D. Dovoy, the ladies' championship was competed for.- Tho''musical programme commonced at 8,50, and tho' following contributed items:—Mrs. M. Sntcliffc and Messrs'.'(l.-Hanse,'A. Warbrick, and H. Armstrong, <J. Wood, and Henry Holmes. Mr. Danioll presented the prizes won by Ul6 successful' competitors ■in a., "street wedding"'Coippctition. Prizes wero also awarded for other novel displays. ; At the conclusion, Mr. H. F. Dairies, on behalf of the gue'stii present, thanked the 'residents for a. mo:it enjoyable evening.
