ANGLICAN BISHOPRIC OF AUCKLAND . BRISTOL CLERGYMAN ELECTED. BUT UNABLE TO ACCEPT. ; (By Telegraph.—Press Association.)'..' Auckland, October 2fi. ' Matters in. connection with the eleo tion of an Anglican Bishop of Auckland, in succession to Dr. Neligan, have arrived . at a deadlock. ' A littlo. after, midnight last night the i Synod elected the ,Itov. John, Primatt Maud, vicar, of St. Mary, ltedcliffe, Bristol, to the vacant Bishopric, and a. cablo- : gram was dispatched by Archdeacon ' Calder (the commissary) to Mr. Maud, ; notifying .him of .his election,, but a reply ' was received from the. latter; this after- . noon, stating that owing to family reasons he was unable.to accept,the appoint" - ment. , The Synod, after , transacting a portion of its ordinary business this afternoon,, again went into committee, and discussed, the position with closed doors.' The deliberations. were continued Jor. two hours,., but without arriving at any resolution '.beyond a decision to postpone the election tor th© time ■ being.. On the Synod adjourning at 5.30 it was announced that owing: to the inability - i , Maud to accept the invitation • sont to him, the consideration of tha, election of a bishop should to postponed to an adjourned session of the Synod, to bo held at a time ,to be fixed by tha : standing committee. ' . There were several, names mentioned and tho proceedings at the.informal conference held for the-, purpose of making the selection were very protracted, sev-., eral votes having to betaken before th#'; selection of Mr. Maud was agreed'upon'' about midnight. The Bishop-elect is ! spoken of as an eminent scholar and an • . J able preacher,- with special'abilities' in ' 1 missionary work. The Church of. St. ■- Mary Rcdcliife/ Bristol, is one of- tho oldest and ; ,; most beautiful in' England; and has'already provided five Bishops for ■ i Home and abroad, including the Primata of Scotland and Bishops.of Glasgow and-'-Pretoria.'Mr.' Maud is a prominent - ' 1 churchman in 'England,-and was one of the : missioners to. South Africa 1 at tha. . conclusion, of the Boer War. Archdeacon ■ C. C. Harper, of Palmerston' North, wai> ' - at once time his ourate, . . . '• The Rev. John.'Primatt Maud is about 48 - years of age. He was educated at • Keble College,' Oxford (second-class moderations)' 1881, B.A. (first-class modern' history) 1883, M.A. 1887; 'He want to" ■ Cnddesdon -Theological in 1887. : Ho was ■' ordained > deacon m 1888 and priest in : 1889. He was appointed curate (of tho ■■ • Church of .St. John the Evangelist; West. , minster, in 1888, and held that ■ 'position ; .till 1890, when he became vicar.orChappehAllerton.. He was rural dean of Bedminster in 1904,' and •in the; sar-io year :. he became vicar of St. Mary Rfid'iliffe, a-, position which he holds at-the present time. He was appointed commissary to . the Bishop of- Pretoria (Dr. Furse), and -. Honorary Chaplain to the Bishop of Glasgow (Dr._ Campbell). Mr. Maud.is . the eldest son of the late Vioar of Ancaster, Lincolnshire. Ho was. trained. under Archdeacon Furse ,at St./ John's, Westminster, and- married lfis3 T Furse. Ho has six- children. 'He was one of the three forerunners, of the South „ African, General Mission in, 1902 and'tovisited South' Africa after, the mission.'
