■'•'•■■'.■••' Melbourne, October 26. •A deputation which waited on the Aoting Prime Minister, Mr. W. M. Hughes, protested, against Mr; O'Malley's statement:that a-minimum-wage of eight shillings would .be excessive.
Mr.'. Hughes replied that the, Government, believed in every adult receiving a marrying wage.. Strong.'.exception .had been taken ,to. the Public Service"Commissioner declaring l what wages should Be paid under the Act, but the-Govern-ment had to pay the prescribed rates! He thought; all the Commonwealth- employees should receive the minimum irrespective of whether they had seen three-years', service or. not.. He could only express his own opinion, but he thought the amount should be increased from <£110 per annum on: account of the increased cost of living. . He would consult his colleagues, but owing to the 1 pressure of business' he held out ho promised legislation.
