JOTTINGS FROM WANOANUI.

"-;.;"' A BOOM IN DAIRYING. ..QUESTION OF , GRADING PORT; '■'■.;'. (From. Our Spooial Oorrpspondont.) Wanaanui, October 26./ The dairying industry is making great strides in this district, • and' the output this year is expected to be almost doublo that of last season; It is anticipated that fwtween forty-thousand and. fifty thousand i boxes' will be sent :;to PatcaV. for grading and shipment this year. In view of the large areas of, land coming into 'occupation here, as well as those being ciitaip, tho prospect a big annual increase for several .years to como seems bright. A grievance with' the dairy in-terests-here is : the necessity of sending the butter all. tho way to Patea 'for grading, in some instances from as far away asi-Taihape. It is poinded out that the knocking:.about in'transit, tends to deterioration,/oiid there is. also .the ajlded'.disadvantage of delay in shipment owing to the difficulties of navigation at Patea. {Indeed, it is'not an '■ infrequent occurrence for butter, after grading, td be railed back fromSPatea to Wanganui for shipment from this port. When the output of this district was smaller this was felt to be a necessary evil,.but with the growth of the industry in.the district served by Wangamti,- ii; is felt that tho tiihe has 'arrived _ for a change, and a strong agitation is-'-now on- foot among those interested to - have Wangahui made a gradirig port. Local dairy interests hayo submitted an offer to the Department, of Agriculture. to pay JBBO per annum towards the/salary of a grader if the- official at Patea will givo a portion of ;his:timo to grading at Wangariui. It is felt that jt is only a matter of a short time when a 'permanent appointment at Winganui will bo absolutely necessary, riot in the way-of supplanting Patea, but rather --. of.'. supplementing the facilities already there.; The movement is being watched with great ■ interest by dairymen all:through this district, inquiries on the subject, having been received from as far away as. Apiti, in'.the Feilding district. ' Thoj Wanganui Borough Council decided last evening to adopt (if found to be commercially feasible) a scheme for electric light: and power .to be run in conjunction with tho tramways. The borough engineer and town clerk were directed to draw up a statement of the' cost of the proposed undertaking, an estimate of tho probable receipts and' expenditure, and also an estimate of the cost of street lighting by electricity, and the saving to the borough as compared with street, lighting by gas.

; The bar channel continues to maintain its improvement. Yesterday fundings wero taken by the Harbour Board engineer, withtho result that the shallowest part of the channel gives a clear depth of ,15 feet. ■ ■■'■■

"No, I never carry iny watch when'l go out," she; said, artlessly. "I am so careless that-it iwouldn't be safe. Why/ a person could steal anything right from under my nose, and I wouldn't miss it." .Then the young man by her side stole a kiss, and she seem to miss it.
