OREGON IMPORTS.
QUESTION OF DUTY.
A question asked by Mr. Glover, M.P. for Auckland City, in the House recently was as under:
(1) When the Government propose to give the House the opportunity to adopt, or otherwise, the recommendations of the Timbei Commission?
(2) Are they aware that an American schooner is now discharging 1,250,000 ft. of sawn Oregon pine at Auckland, and, if so, what steps they propose to take to protect the interests.of the sawmillers: and workers engaged in this particular industry—namely, by way of placing an additional duty on all sawn timber imported into the Dominion?
• The official reply, which was given in the House yesterday,, was— (1) It is not possible to say. (2) The import of Oregon timber into New Zealand has diminished to such an extent that there does not seem to. be any necessity for taking any action, at present. Although. the annual output from' New Zealand mills is over four hundred million superficial feet, the import of timber from Canada has been as follows:—For 1908, laths and ■ shingles, ;6,264,929 (in number), other timber (sawn, undressed) 11,572,878 sup. ft; for 1909, laths and shingles 1,426,988 (in number), other timber (sawn, undressed) 3,693,812 sup. ft."; for 1910 (January to June), laths and shingles 289,500 (in number), other timber (sawn, undressed) 1625 sup. ft. -
