It ; is'said" in some- quarters that R. J. ..Mason lifts a better 21year-old than Piererio at home,, but rumour does; not say whether it is the Martian—Twpstep filly, the Martian— Allegresse colt, Or the Clanranald—Happy Valley filly. If Pierone is set to carry Mr. G. I). Greenwood's colours'-in tho ; Welcome Stakes, then with her penalty of 101b. (incurred for winning at Tren> than)) Miscount may defeat her. In this lino' of.reasoning, however,, another, difficulty arises, for many peoplei profess to believe that.Miscount is not tho best of thc'Karainu youngsters, and tliat Bootlo ;wiH'carry:the corise colours on Saturday week. The last named certainly shaped well in his only. start this season,' but whether ho-is 1 a hotter/..c011' than Miscount, remains to be seen. Formerly, the pair used always to work together, and : Miscount was; then tho hotter. /' Their trainer then tried working them separately, and i t is ..thought. that the, change proved beneficial to Bootlo.' Tho 'latter has: had'one start and ono' win. , No 'horse can have.a better record.than this, but-it should be.borno in mind that there was nothing - within 141b. of- Piereno in tho field which Bootlo-met, while on two occasions,.' Miscount has run the' Achilles filly to -a neck. This certainly makes it appear as if Miscount: is superior to Bootle. ■-.■.../■- Wlien' Provocation -was known to' bo looking and galloping so well, a fow weeks ago, it was anticipated that Mr. Bidwill's champion would play a very important ■ pint in tho Stewards' Handicap. He was not what ono would term well treated with 9st. 31b., but still a few pounds makes no difference to a really good horse. over . a short course, so that had ho stood his ground, the son of . Birkenhead wOuld havo started as good a favourite as anything in the race. However, the dread inlluenza made its appearance on the colt at Trentham and, after being paid up for on both ' days, ho was unable to start. The news of his scratching for' the big lUccarton sprint was therefore not unlookod for. It is understood that W. Young will ride tho top weight, Oiyoi, iii the Now Zealand .Cup. ■;.'■'.' There is a general consensus of opinion that should lMerriwa strip fit and well on the day, Cullinan, tho other representative of Mr. T. H. Lowry, will be withdrawn from the New Zealand Cup field. Polymorphous, being noted as a bad track worker, did not'cause any surprise'by- his backward running in the Champion Plato. The race will no doubt'improve him-con-siderably, but at such a late stage, it would bo. too much to expect that he could bo got ready for the New Zealand' Cup, and he is not likely to bo persevered with for tho two-mile race. Those who stepped in early and backed him for the race at Riccarton are probably now regretting that they were so hasty in the matter. Diabolo is another horse that has been boomed in an unaccountable manner for the New Zealand Cup, and, all along, ho has been kept at. a very, short price. This may have boon duo to tho machinations of tho ringmen, who were determined to keep him at a short price, in case ho came into tho market. Those who were illadvised enough to,back lilm will not liko their chance after tho black' horse's display at Trentham, but it is considered certain that ho will bo n starter, and will bo ridden by Jenkins. At the settling after tho Caillfield Cup, tho owner of Flaviuius, Mr. F. Morton, treated tho members of the Victorian Club to wine, and among tho toasts drunk was that of J. Siely, who prepared Flavinius. T. Payten responded on behalf of his follow-trainer, and expressed his disapproval of money being wasted on champagne when it could be much better, spent in charity. Sonic of those-present were inclined to regard the Kandwick trainer's remarks as humorous, but it is certain ho was quite sincere in tho matter, and ho ,is not the. only man prominent in the game who, to commemorate a win, jvould sooner give .£lO or .£2O to .charity

Uinu expend money on providing wine for those who do not need it. However, Jlr. Pnyten's remarks were productive of good, for Mr. Merton subsequently handed lm-i £% to )jc expended in providing a Christmas dinner for the poor of Randwick.— Sydney "Hoforco." Nominations for the Dannevirko Racing Club's meeting close to-morrow night. A largo number of horses left for lliccarton by the southern steamer last night. These included the teams of It. J. Mason, S. Waddell, ami G. Price. Longstep, who ran such a good race in the Rtmlimo Hack Handicap at Troiitliam on Saturday, is engaged in the Dash Handicap, five furlongs, on the first day of tlio Mastertoil meeting. .-.. Tho Victorian Eacing Club's spring carnival commences at Elemington on Saturday next, when tho Maribyrnong Plate, the V.R.C. Derby, and the Melbourne. Stakes will be decided. Tho Melbourne Cup is to bo run to-day week. ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT. Argument.—Usual weight for flat rnca 2Jlb., and for jumping race slb.
