■ 'FORTNIGHTLY- meetikg. The fortnightly meeting of the; Petone Borough Council' was held last '-evening, there Being present: The MayorQlr. U. W.- M'Ewan), and Councillors' Short, Southgato, Piper, List, Jones, Harding, .Brockiebank; -and Trueman. . ;,'. A letter, was . received from, the city solicitor (Mr. J. O'Shea), asking that all plans and '.specifications.'.held, by the council ;■ regarding Hutt Pipe Bridge bo returned, as proceedings would have to be taken under the Municipal Corporations Act instead of under the Publio Works Act This, explained the Mayor, had been done, the alteration in the' procedure being, he said, rendered necessary by a recent Supreme Court judgment. . • :■.,". A copy of: tho Municipal Corporations' Act Amendment Bill how before Parliament was laid on tho table, and on.the motion'of .Councillor Piper 1 the council resolved. ;that.'the member .for. .the dis-, trict be requested to move at time for the insertion of. a clause validating tho ; authority ,of municipalitiesin the matter of : by-laws : dealing . with, tho regulation of.air space and,road;frontages. This authority had, it was pointed out, been seriously affected by a recent decision!of the Appeal Court in an Auckland municipal by-law' case. ■ The. council decided, after disoussion, to extend its patronage to tile Heretaunga Boating Club's gala, and to .donate £a, to tho gain.. It.was also agreed that the engineer bo authorised, to tako steps to- have the beach cleaved of rubbish. Satisfaction was expressed that the previous- gala had been so successful, and it was generally conceded that • tho council was justified in assisting to popularise-; tho beach.
