A MISUNDERSTANDING.
TOBACCONISTS AND HOTEL--KEEPERS. - A telegraphic message from Palmerston, published in The DosnwoN on Saturday, gave rise to an exchange of messages between Mr. J. B. Speed, president of tho Dominion Tobacconists' Federation, and Mr. Bittelmeyer, secre-, tary of tho Hairdressers' and Tobacco-'-njsts' Association at Pahnerston. ' Th§ message referred -to stated that the I'almerston Association decided to support the proposal for a £5 licensee fee; also that, unless tho local hotelkeopers agreed to abandon altogether the salo of tobaccqnjsts'. goods, those ■. present (at the association meeting) pledged themselves to work in the interests of Prohibition. On seeing this message, Mr; Speed telographod to Mr. Bittelmeyer, at Palmerston, in the following terms: — "Your attitude re publicans, wrong. Thojr Federated Assooiatioii only 'too willing to assist in our demand. Please president." Mr. Bittelmeyer replied inquiring, "Is your wire private opinion, or that of executive?—Bittelrricyor." Mij.-Specd's rejoinder was: "Discussed 'at conference, May. Speaking for local association, also Dominion Executive. Publish." At this tho matter rests for the moment. , Mr. Speed told a Dominion reporter on Saturday evening that-the Hotelkeepers' Association, addressing the Tobacconists' Federation at the timo of its conference in May last, stated that its members would rather not retail cigars and cigarettes in the bars at all. They would bo content.to keep those articles in thoir offices for the uso of guests only. They were perfectly ready to fall;into line with the tobacconists' desires, for tboy considered that the retailing of cigars and cigarettes in bars led ratlior to loss to hotelkeepers than to profit. It was in view of those facts that Mr. Speed telegraphed a3 abovo stated,, to Palmerstqn, on observing the message detailing tho attitude, taken by tho Hairdressers' and Tobacconists' Association in that town. Mr. Speed is convinced that there will be no difficulty in arriving at a friendly arrangement with hotelkeepers. ,
