Mr, W. F. Massey, Leader of "the Opposition,'who has been suffering from a cold, has now reccA-ered, and has resumed Parliamentary duties. Mr. David Con. -Hutton, for. many years a well-known figure in educational circles in Dunediu, where he was principal of the School of Art, died at; his summer' residence, Broad Bay, on Thursday last. Mr. Hutton was born at Dundee, Scotland, in : He began his artistic career at 1 the School of Art in his native city, and gained a free studentship after the first year. He was appointed an art pupil teachej in 1859, and at about the same; perio<J issued a "Freehand- Drawing" series, which was adopted in .various schools. In 1563 Mr. Hutton gained, an, Art Master's certificate,.and: in■■: 1865.. received an appointment at . the: ..Perth; School of Arts. His Otago appointment was conferred by the Provincial CounoiL Arriving at Port Chalmers in 1870, Mr. Hutton established the School of Art at Dunedin, and initialed a, course of: instruction, at' the ..various schools,, which produced: .excellent ■"..■'■ results. Married in 1872 to a daughter of:. Mr. A. Douglas, chiefolerk in theVEdinburgh General Post Office, Mr. Hutton had.a family of five sons and -five daughters.
