— 4- • ". (From Our Special Correspondent! ■ Palmcrston, October 22. The Stoney Creek Hall was crowded last night, when a concert, organised by Mrs. Arthur Vaugban, was given in aid of the District Nurse Fund, which benefited substantially by the entertainment. The concert was organised at the' instance of the.Mayoress (Mrs. J.-A. Nash), who has been interesting herself in the' work of the district nurse,. and similar entertainments have been held. in. other parts of .the' district, .with the, object of aiding.' the • fund, and thus enabling the good work of the nursing division to be carried on efficiently. The.' report .submitted by. the inspector to the.meeting of the. committee of the. Society for the Prevention . of Cruelty to Animals yesterday showed, that during the past five weeks seventeen eases had been dealt with, including one in which the offender was haled before the Court, and fined 40s, and costs. ■ The question of the railing of pigs was ; discussed, the statement, being- made that pigs were on occasions two days without food, and ■ that trucks'.were'much overcrowded. It was decided to endeavour to have this matter remedied. Several anonymous letters had been received, but' it was decided not to take action on these, as 1 it. was impossible to know/what actuated the,writers. The Palmerston Amateur Athletic Club has decided to open the season with a five-mile rim on November 23." ' An evening meeting is to be. held on December 7. ■' . :. '
