'important ; one ■municipally for the whole' .of I. Australasia 1 :—is',-1 feel sure, destined to-lead to a re-awakening in;.the matter of.orchestral; music, ; .which' the city has. long been deprived of. The visits to 'Wellington-, of.. the Exhibition Orchestra ;struck the : key- of popular l enthusiasm, .Signor Hazon's; band with'the Grand Opera Company proved an'oasis in a ;desert, and there ,;.is little doubt that .if the. members;show an 'earnest desire to work, and make'the weekly rehearsal an appointment that must ' not "be broken, they, will, under Mr. Barnett, •do a,valuable service.to the community. Little can;be expected after.but three or four'rehearsals, and nothing very exacting is.,being attempted. ■'Nevertheless,, the (music -is of the good popular order, and intending patrons, can anti-' cipatea highly enjoyable concert.' It .will include;two movements of Haydn's Symphony, , four movements of Massenet's "Le Cid" (ballet/music), . the prelude to the third act of "Lohengrin" .(Wagner), and the Cornelius March. l Mr. Herbert Bloy will act as leader, of the orchestra, and will also contribute a couple of solos. Mr. Barnett thoroughly deserves everyone's good wishes.
Arnold TroweN on Tour. ■Mr. Arnold' Trowell, the distinguished Wellington 'cellist, was on tour with Mark Hambourg in England last month'. A notice in the "Wallasey 1 Chronicle", of August 24 says:—Mr. Arnold : Trowell's violoncello; soli lent agreeable variety to the recital.-. Displaying a magnificent tone, 'rich and full, the artistic sentiment and the unfaltering execution which are the distinguishing features. of. his stylo were especially conspicuous in variations on a theme of Schubert's by Servais, and a piquant "Nocturne," .composed "by the performer..';. Exquisite touch' and expression of" the perfect master were further examplified in Popper's characteristic "Rhapsodic Hongroiso," and for an encore piece "Petite Valse"-by Victor Herbert. ■/'-.'
A Brighton paper says:—"Without doubt Mr. Arnold Trowell is something more than an accomplished and finished 'cellist—he is a genius.; His violoncello solos were nothing short of brilliant: We listened in ecstasy to -his variations on. a theme of Schubert's - (Servais), and' the ' 'Rhapsodic Hongroiso', (Popper), his beautiful bowing/delicate fingering, and 'soul' winning for him a well-deserved popularity. • Ho was encored for both items." .
