WATER-POWER QUESTION.

A mooting of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce'was- hold- to-day,' when Mr. F.W; Carey presided: ...The quesition- of the railway. ..time-table in; the Wairarapa was brought'up by Mr. Garey, who proposed that Mr.-Ross, M.P. for Pahiatua,' bo thanked-for his stand in the matter of improving' the time-table in the district; A: .commit tee of three members of the chamber was appointed to confer with Mr. Ross on the matter. ."■'.■.■'. . .. It was suggested that the first train at Wellington, and the last one back in the 'afternoon should not pick uiA.or put down-passengers or goods between Wellington and Upper Hutt. Tho chairman also brought ; up the question of the Rimutaka deviation,' and .men-i ti-oned. the estimated saving that would accrue if the project were carried. ' It was decided, on the motion of Mr. Donald, that circulars be sent to members of 'Parliament interested, 'showing the benefits, that would result from, the work being done. ; Mr. Donald brought up matter of harnessing .the water-, power of the Dominion, which, he thought (at'.the price proposed to be charged for electric current) was both expensive: and prohibitive. It was moved':/> "That this chamber ■ approves of the proposal of the Government to harness the' water power of the Dominion, but considers the cost of £33 per horse-power excessive: arid. prohibitive; This, council'is-, of opinion that it-would bejbetter and .more economical for the-Government to lend money to local bodies or a'public corporation for the purpose." This was seconded, and 'carried; The question of the northern approach to-Masterton was brought up, Mr. Donald that ferro-con-creto should be used , instead . of- wood. It was decided to .'recommend that the borough' and country' conncils -be .'written -to,', suggesting'_that a, bridge', be erected^over tho Waipoua River, on the Columbia Road- extension, as -such a bridgo-would be of great' convenience, on account'of the shifting of the sale yards and show grounds to Solway., .
