Sir,—After, the. Wellington . Cricket Association had decided to expand a few hundred pounds in securing the services of a "coach," it was a reasonable thing .to assume that they were I fully alive to the fact that our cricket was sadly in need of a tonic,, and also that they .' would 'do something to awaken tho dying interest of the public. There is no doubt at all that it is the patronage of the publio that makes or mars the game of oricket, or any public game for .that matter; and the rare accorded to the public, who visited the Basin Reserve on the last two Saturdays, has been so haphazard and unbusinesslike that oho naturally wonders whether the Management Committee of tho Wellington Association, overcome after settling the momentous, question whether we should have a "coach" or not, has fallen wearily to sleep.and is allowing the game to work out its own salvation. The appearance, of Saunders in the Basin Reserve will bring along many a more or'less ardent supporter of the game,, who has not been accustomed to following the game regularly, and.under the present arrangements he will probably come once' and not return, because he will have no chance in ' the world of knowing who is playing on different wickets or even how each game is going, unless ho fossicks, round, and asks someone-,who may know no more than himself. ■ During the'last two Saturday afternoons the scoring boards have been left unattended to for sometimes half an hour, and at no> time wero thoy reliable. They are also placed badly and the association should seriously consider the question of transferring " tho scoring boa,rd for No. 3 wicket to its old placo near the fountain. This may present some difficulty, but it should nevertheless be done so that the public can plainly understand which game the different boards refer to. There are also many spectators unfamiliar with the different clubs, and it would be of the utmost assistance to those peoplo if it wero shown above the scoring boards which two teams wero engaged oh tho different wickets. In-': ciden tally, I might mention that a wellregulated scoring board is.a sourco of great satisfaction to tho players, whether thoy are batting'or fiolding. I hope that tho "Wellington Cricket Association will mako uso of the suggestions put forward hero and will adopt them without delay.—l am, etc., RIP VAN WINKLE.
