The fields in all the events are quite up to the average for a second day and, as the track is in such capital order, the club's patrons may expect a good afternoon's sport. The principal event to be decided to-day is the Champion Plate, weight-for-age, one mile -and a quarter. Lord Kelvin was the only withdrawal from this event yesterday; so that six horses are still left in. Danube and Lady Medallist are the favourities, but as Polymorphous and Birkdale both hail from powerful stables they are: sure to be well backed, and the other two candidates, Sir Frisco and The Lark, will not be wanting for support.
In the Pearce Handicap there are nina acceptors. These do not include Lady Medallist and Sir Antrim, who finished first and second in the Wellington Handicap on_ Wednesday, _ but Wimmera and Iranui, who finished third and fourth in that race, will be starters. . .
