The second meeting falls on the following Saturday at the Basin Reserve. It is in the form of a military and athletic tournament for cadets and Boy Scouts, in which four open events are included,-- to wit:—loo and 220 yards, one mile run, and hop, stop, and jump, all handicaps, and nil the usual Is. nomination. Entries close on November 5 at Kitto and Graham's, Manners Street, and at Bloxham's, Willis Streot. Some Jottings. On September 17, 1910, H. V. M'Cabe, of Brisbane, broke the Australasian amntour record for the hop, stop, and jump
with the fine performance of 45ft. ijin. Tho previous record had been held since 18!)U by M. Roseingrave, with 45ft, 3in. Following closely on the foregoing comes the news that at tho Celtic Park, Long Island, recently, D. Ahearn broke the world's record for the hop, step, and jump, covering 51ft. 7in.
A novel event was run off in the Sydney Skating Rink recently when Jas. Fitzgerald, the ex-amateur Canadian Marathon runner beat Jack Burleigh, Willie Tamsett, and Johnny Duffey, three of Sydney's best roller skaters, in a match which provided that he should cover 10 miles while the skaters in relays were to cover 1G miles. The ned. won by six laps (half a mile) in 53min. 12sec.
Fitzgerald is a good all-Tound sport, as will be judged from the following summary of his athletic record as supplied by an exchange:—"Ho turned professional last June, and sinco then ho has not been beaten in distances from 10 to 15 miles, and amongst his opponents have been Shrubb, Ives (French Marathon champion), Hayes, Dorando, J. D. Marsh (Canadian champion), and Paul Acoose (the Indian runner). Fitzgerald represented Canada in the five miles and one mile. The Marathon was his first professional, and he ran third to Ives and J. D. Marsh, Ives's time being a record. Fitzgerald has not confined himself, to running. He played for London Club against M.C.C. at cricket (he is an Englishman), also for London in Association football. His brother, W. A. Fitzgerald, hold the championship of the Thames at sculling for a _ couple'._ of years, and was also an international lacrosse player." '.'■■■ '• \ ' It is not unlikely that Fitzgerald will be in New Zealand shortly as negotiations have been on foot for a match with W. F. Trembath, the Gore ex-champion amateur. So far the difficulty has been to settle upon a suitable distance, the New Zealander wanting. anything from: 880 yards down, and the visitor from, a mile upwards; ...
