When the By-Laws Committee, tecwa* mended to the City ,C<ninoil last night that the position of Temporary ijssistant Plumbing Injector should be filled by the appointment of llr. Samuel Q. Lovely it was observed by the "Mayor (Mr. W3ford) that although, the appointment,had been advertised, in , accordance 'with the .wish, of the Plumbers' Union, only four applications were received,' and , .one of ,tty>so was from a man who had not long come out from Home. The salary waa M 23. 6d. a week. The fewness of the applications was doubtless due to the great demand for phrabets in connection with building work in the city and euborbs.

Councillor Frost raid there might be another reason. He thought, that from the council's aotion in-the past, it was {iretty well 'understood that no New Zeaander need apply.
