Respecting the complaint of. Mr. James 0. Walters, of AVanganui (which appeared in- the form of. a. letter in. Saturday's Dootnios), that owing.- to : the, lack' of a ; '-herbarium-.-m -Wellington he had been: '.unable .-.-.to .identify tho.. specimens of New:. life he had coll-ect«d, Mr.:-A;-; Hamilton,'. curator, of the .Dominion- Museumhad something to say on being consulted by a representative: of-this paper, on Saturday. He 'states -that so : far. from: thefje 'being -no. , collections in the Museum, there. were some very, important: collections of New Zealand.plant life'. •' One-was a very/good* collection made' by Mr. John Buchanan, of the/original Now Zealand survey, and another is ithat; made'by ,the Eev., Mr. Colenso. In-■••addition'to • these there': were a vast number of other specimens.! which i had been collected 'by numerous during . 1 the 30. years; It was true, howewr, that these were, -in. the miin,:' not accessible;'• as • the herbarium room was occupied. by stores of other specimens in the first .place, and, secondly, there , had been nor opportunity given: to do inbre than.- inspect 'the collections from time to time: to. ;seo - that they were not entirely ' . destroyed by herbarium pests. Two. or. three wellknown collectors have offered assistance to renovate the collections, biit it had been found to be im practicable to . accept their offers owing to the absence of accommodation. ; All ' that had boon, done-had been to-enclose the collections m collectors' cardboard boxes on ' the modern system. The director pointed out in his first bulletin that, in addition. to the collections of New Zealand plants/ thero was a very valuable collection of- 28,000 specimens of European plants, which had been presented by the trustees, of : , the British Museum in 1878. These were contained in.seven or eight.',cases,; which with one exception had never yet been opened.
