DEATH OF A WELL-KNOWN MISSIONARY.
, The iSooiety has lost another of. it's '"distiiigiiishod missionaries by tho .'death! ofDr. Maurice Phillips, who two years ago retired after a prolonged'period of'service-in India. In 1891 Mr. Phillips was appointed as ' a deputation to. the Australasian colonies, and in 1893 lie and his wife came to England. 'Returning to Madras in, 1894 ho continued his work there. In 1900 they came homo i again on furlough;' and Mr. ; Phillips proceeded to Now! York as a delegate of tho Ecumenical Conference.; Ho returned. to India in 1901, and retired from active service in July, 1908. Most of Mr. Phillips's work was "itinerating work in tho districts under his charge, for which, ho was admirably equipped. He published in 1895 "The Teaching of tho 'Vedas," and lie had a wido reputation as a scholar. In-1900 lie gained the degree of Ph.D. from the University of Basic! Ho had been living sinco his retirement at Southport. Dr. Phillips had practically completed a' scholarly and oxhaustivc work upon "The Evolution of Hinduism," which had occupied: him during tho past ' fourteen jears.
