Management Committee's new scheme has met . with, the approval; of the majority of the clubs. There can be no doubt, that :the sckemo allows for a 'greater " numbar ■of / playerstaking part, in' the' ■ competitions. i The . separate competitions,: allow, the clubs to' classify their players more ieasily, rand; the suburban clu&s, who hav» few lady members, are/now able.to',provide their men. . '■ ;■ > It' is'/pleasing .to, note the re-entry 'of the Johnsonville, Club' into the 1 competiv The entry Vof .the -"Muritai Club into the men's senior gmdo is a surprise.' This.entiy is!the :result-of- the .decision of the' Newtown Club not to enter., Nagle, Wright,. and Lewis are eager, for the matches, and have, Joined Muritai.; Joiies has been, induoed to play,; and will make one of the team. ; Kilbirnie. will also bo strengthened by some of the Newtown; members.' The Brougham Hill Club has nominated, the largest, number of teams, and nearly half its players .will be tak-. ing 'part, in the matohes. Although not so,.strong as in former. years,'all of-, its' teams will be up to the standard of the respective grades entered for.. The club' will, be without the services'of Hawkins,Watkius, and-Drummor-d this year.""Victoria College, always ; ilw, iwunted" on : for a good entry. lis senior, men's-beam will be a weak one,, but the other grades, should bo stronger than in . previous eeasons.. '-''rj ' /Trinity.Church Club has. been strength-, ened. lately, and its 13 teams will be "hard nuts.; to crack".'',, ' 1 :
Wellington.Club'.will only provide for its senior players. Tho men's" toams should: be . strong, but tlio second, ladies' team . can. hardly be classed ■in the A grade. "■> '' '■ Lower Hutt is only entering for the men's competition. With Hawkins, Ward, and Cornell as /members, of , the 'club is now able to try for senior honours. The B team will be just as.strong 09 it was last year. Johnsonville 1 and ' Khandallah Clubs have entered for the. lower grades, the majority of their senior players not desiring to be. tied every Saturday. It will be possible to arrange for two rounds in all - but the A grade, in which grade the ; matches are to finish. before Christmas.' This will leave more courts available for a second round nr the othor grades. Arranging the Draw.
The Drawings, Committee (Messrs. Salmond, Lawrence, . and Barclay) havo a stiff problem boforo them in arranging the; drawing. There will be about,:forty. courts availablo for the competitions, and these will be ample to allow of'the matches in all grades, being played weekly, allowing for tho byes. There will bo a bye every Saturday' in all but two grades. Owing to tho Day's Bay courts not being available until: October 22, it has boon decided to postpone tho commencement of the matches to that dato. This will allow tho selected teams time to practise, and 'will' suit those clubs that have yet to open their courts. The secretary of the Match Committee has arranged that the result sheets will bo received for him at Mr. Speed's shop on Lambton Quay, on tho evening of the matches, and captains of; teams will bo assisting tho secretary, a. great deal if they comply with tho conditions set out in the result sheets, which will bo sup. plied to tho clubs competing. .' A Point of i Interest. For those interested, and who may not ihavo go no into the matter, it may be worth mentioning that, with four oloirera
aside, it may often happen, 'during; the coming competitions, that each of the opposing teams will score even wins.
' In the A- and B grades, in the men's competition, and in tho A grade in the ladies, in which each matcih is to be the best two i out of three straight sets—if rubbers are even, then sets will bo counted, .nud if sets are even, too, then games will be counted. In the other grades—in which all tiip matches are decided in one set—if sets are even thon games will bo counted.
New Zealand Championship Meeting.
The question of the location .of the next New. Zealand Championship .meeting has reached ah interesting' stage. . The meeting is practically "going' a-bogging," In tho ordinary course of events, tho meeting must'be held' in .the South Island, but the New Zealand Council" decided' that the Davis Cup match and the New Zealand Championships should be played in the same place..' Then it was decided that the cup match .should be played in Wellington, so that settled the location of the championship ; meeting. But, since then, the Davis Cup' match has'fallen--through, and the New Zealand Council are .now offering the meeting to the South. Island associations, but,, seemingly,, they, do .not want it. Should all .the. southern associations reiftwe. it, then. Wellington may have the privilege, of holding the meeting for' two successivo yeaTs. .■ Club; Openings, / The fine.. weather last - Saturday -made the -opening ceremonies of the Karori, Kilbirnie,. Newtowni and Petono Clubs very ' pleasant funotions. . The : Bidwill Street, Jobnsonville, • and - Oriental Clubs intend, to open their, courts this afternoon, and tho* Thorndon courts will, bo opened next Saturday.
