' ■ : As in the opening event on the first day; pointers again failed to size up the situation' correctly in the first race yesterday, for they made Gipsy Belle a very hot favourite, but, after a good race, due to the favourite getting away 'badly, she was beaten by a .'head by Thetis, who seemed much improved' by yesterday's gallop. Theother pair finished close up.

Bismarck was withdrawn • from the Hack.Hurdles, leaving only three runners. Again Te.Ru was. a very short-priced order, and he pulled his backers through, after a very.disappointing display, on the ,partof the other..two riders, v/ho-al-lowed the favourite to,get altogether too big a break in the middle stages of the journey. '.-..'.

Waipunui got a. very bad run'on the first- day, ■ and, this . being generally known, caused'the-Conqueror gelding to be made first choice in the OtaM Hack Handicap. Notorious, Torpoint; and Teotane were also well supported,. but nothing had a chance with the favourite, who (though he got off badly), was in command over the last half, and coming into the straight with a good lead, he won-comfortably.' Notorious .was but in front for time, - but he stopped badly, and must have been knocked out by his first day's,race.- Laius beat the others as easily as "Waipunui beat iim, while Torpoint'and, Teotane ran badly. .

, Twelve runners faced: the starter in the Trial Handicap, the defections being Kopane arid Dusky Sound. Golden Age was quickest to begin, .but he was .soon headed by Merry Frank, who-lead to the turn; Here Portcullis," Goldsley, and Ebonite all put in--challenges,- and the rider of Merry Frank stalled off. all but Goldsley.' He pulled the stick out on Merry Frank/and the Hutt.-horse ran away from it, allowing Goldsley., to win by a head. Red.Liipin was just clear of Portcullis. ? ■.';''■• ! ■■ ■■:■'■

,; Though accepted:, for," .Poiymorphons was not brought down from Palmerston North, and four..started,in the Demonstration Handicap.. Llanwern, who levelled in the heavy going-yesterday, was made favourite.- He: did not get a very good run, and after, a splendid finish,St: Felix beat Sir Antrim by,a head. , Ambrosian. was a poor third, - and the favourite last.,- ■-.•:• ":,'

-■■ Four was again .the number, of starters in : the Welter Hack Handicap, bntjhis time the public were astray, for though Tho Native had' been" badly beaten oh the previous, evening, he was again made favourite.' .Apparently it was forgotten that the-'distance 'was a,furlong further, which,- on public form, was all in Highden's favour.': .Both ' the, favourite and Highden' began ..smartly, but-'after five furlongs The; Native was: in' trouble; and .Hiinitangi ranged up: alongside -Highden. In the straight:the latter, easily disposed .of the Foxton horse, and won comfortablyl by ; six lengths; After, the race -R. Larobers:(rider. Of Floater, who: failed 1 to leave the mark with.-.the 1 others) :was called before';the stewards £2, and' was .'also suspended for the rest of the day.'.. ' ■■:'•: ". ■' .:

Turna, with. Jenkins in-the saddle; was. the elect of,'-.backers.. 'in', the .'Electric Handicap, anil justified- the confidence of.- : backers, -by . winning comfortably.' Rorigomai was first out, but. Turha soon headed him, and'led througho-ut. . The five v. starters .finished "in: the order,_ in which they were backed oh'the:machine.:

' • Astraea was to-day, ridden by W. Price, ■in'place of the,, lad who rode her yesterday; ,when -she .dwelt; badly- at. the barrier. ; To-day, in a field of four; she was made favourite for., tho concluding event. Slip took charge as soon as the. tapes were ,: released, and . after, leading to.. tho straight successfully stalled .oft 'ofalienges from Maliuta and Marton, and'won by two-lengths.
