PECULIAR PETITION.
. ' -1 FIJI CHIEFS TO THE KING. (By Tclcgraph.-Pre3s Association.) ' * Auckland, October 11. ' A petition is (says the "Fiji Times") to be sent to the King by the outgoing mail from tho chiefs of Fiji, protesting against the possible appointment of Mr. Allardyce, now Governor of tho Falkland Islands, to tho Governorship of* Fiji. Tho potition is signed by 32 chiefs. The reason given by tho chiefs for the desire to see Mr. Mahaffy (ex-Colonial Secretary of Fiji) made Governor is that he "understands the natives.",
