SPURIOUS COIN.
'A SAMPLE AT THE BANK.
Spunons coins would appear to be plentiful in New Zealand' at the moment.' An Auckland message printed in The Dominion yesterday notified the appearance in that city of silvered pennies, which had been passed as florinsj" and gilt sixpences passed as half-sovereigns. .Wellington, it seems, is not immune from a similar infliction. A caller at one of tho city banks yesterday was shown by. tho teller a counterfeit shilling, one of a number that have lately made their appearance. The "coin" shown had noi; the ring of the genuine article, but was in other respects a remarkably' good imitation. Recently a Wellington resident showed a reporter a coffee-tin full of bogus florins, which had been deposited on his premises, though for what reason could only be 'conjectured. In this case both weight and appearance were passable, but the "ring" not at all realistic. As far an can bo ascertained coins of thi3 description aie seldom tendered to European tradesmen, but Me Chinese storekeeper, especially if he be a newcomer, newly set-up in business, never knows what time a packet of cigarettes, together nith Ba. Ed. change, may be unwarily pass<--d over the counter by him,in return for £ gilded nothing.
