MIRAMAR TRAMS.
AGREEMENT UPHELD
The City Council, last evening'considered a letter from the MiramaT Borough Council to the effect that it had under consideration the erection of a power station in connection with the water and drainage scheme. Prom this power for. tramways, could also be supplied. The Borough Council desired to know what the car mileage charge would be if power were supplied by the borough.; The- Tramways Committee recommend-' ed that the Borough Council be informed that the council could not see its way to make, any variation in the present agreement.' -, "..'■" .
Councillor Barber opined that there was a great ivasto of public money in; connection with this train service. He understood that the" Miramar Borough was compelled- to take considerably more power than it desired, with, the result that the tram service was made more cxpensivo than, it should be. ... ..
Tire Mayor: We charge them Is. per car milo for power, and it costs us 11.9 d. to produce it. - Councillor Barber remarked-that he understood that the. Miramar people desired to.reduce the number, of cars running. One local body should not oppress another. . •''.'
'. The Mayor said that the figures which he had quoted showed that the.council in this caso charged no more for power than it was compelled to do. The Miramar Borough was.not forced to. take" any more current. ..than .was .necessary. If they generated, power themselves. thoy would use exactly the. same ■ quantity as at present. . '.'■'.' •-..-, .;"> Councillor Barber stated that he. had been informed that the Miramar. people wore compelled to run more cars- than they desired in order,to fit in with.the city service. . Otherwise a saving could be effected by the borough, by reducing the .number of . ears. .' '
The Mayor said that it was in his recollection that some weeks previously' an agreement had been made with, the Miramar Council to reduce the number" if cars running. The 'council had. shown itself only -too ready to meet the wishes of the borough. The recommendation'of'the'committee was adopted. -. .* •■ , ■■
