THE LATE DR. NISBET.

PULPIT REFERENCE.!'

. -Preaching at St. John's- Presbyterian Church, yesterday, morning, the lltev.' E. Inglis spoke of the death of-.tko Bev. Di. Nisbet. of .Dunedin. •. He said;—" Last Thursday morning's paper ; brought lis news whichcame with somethin? like ; 'a shock- to the' Presbyterian community. I refer to :the death, of-tho lato Dr. Nisbet; -, of Dunedin.. 'Ho :was an outstanding figure.in our'church, d gifted 'breacher and organiser, : iand,ah ablejeadiir.. But to' I 'those, who knew. : liinY best,- thiise were, but secondary things" compared ivith the largeness of his'heart. He war: a big, man in every way—in mind, in body, and in soul—and .it:; was' .one.-of ,trie great blessings of my life to know him intimately as a life-long friend. ; Together we : entered Glasgow (Jniversity.'.iand for five years/sat on the same benches. Together we: entered the'.Theological College, in Edinburgh and studied there for three years. I came out to. Sydney by the one. vessel and';he. followed ;by the next;-. W© stayed together in the. same house in Sydney, and then our paths diverged for many years, "although". our friendship remained unbroken; All through. - the' ■ years that" friendship was undisturbed'by a single, jarring iiote.'.He' was the very soul of loyalty,,and ■ every oho of his' fellow students acknowledged tho fact; I can', well imagine, how true and devoted a husband ami father he was, but that. can be fully known only to God and to those who loved Mm best. The earnest prayers and sympathies of thousands, both here and in Australia, are with them in-this hour of darkness and grief. When I think of that splendid physique,' that ■ noble,' manly face, that .big,; loving, heart,; that .;brilliant career, then that.long .and eager search for. health, 'that stalwart'frame, shattered by sicknessy-and-'-that pathetic,'hdmecoming, only to 'lie and bo laid to nistamid tho people whom he loved, what I feel is : perhaps best expressed by tho wonte of Christ- . • ',- ', "I must work tho works of Him that sent me while it is day. Tho night cometh when no man can work." - ;l
