' 0-- NOTES ON THE RACING. '•-"All. past, records were easily eclipsed by;-tho; Wanganui Club this year and the spring meeting wound up on Satur-day.-with another good day's racing. Light showers fell-early in the day, but they made no difference either to the crowd, or the going, and after the Open Hurdle Race bright sunshine prevailed.
vThere; were only five runners in the first race and although' Countermine Darned most money there was strong support; for Emblem, Mon Ami, and To Roti. .The Hawera mare was straight on when the tapeswere slipped, but sho ran back and took no part in the race. Mon Ami quickly, got a break from Countermine, and'across .the bottom it looked as it Rho would not be caught; but at the
turn slio stopped as on the first day and though she carno again tho Chokebore filly beat her .by a liock.
. Falsetto, Golden Loon, Big Blast, and All Blue were all well fancied in the Railway Hack Race,. the issue being regarded as very open. It was a good race and a fast one, but it nearly resulted in a boil-over, for Valentino, shooting out with Big Blast, made the pace very warm and soon spread the field out.: Golden. Loop- got a- clear run, and hard ridden the whole way, caught Valen-tino-in. the- last fifty yards. Falsetto was.again left, but she put. in; a good run and. was passing everything at tho finisli.. : . \ . ; Reuniaoand Tauira wcro 'the choice of backors in the ,Open Hurdles, but an outsider in Sardonyx rushed'off at flagfall and led the whole way. Considering the conditions the timo recorded was vei'y fast.. Tauira got away badly and was not prominent,' and Reumac was never' closer than third. Xavier was also unfortunate at the barrier, and ho, finished very fast as on the first day./. .... Matters:got badly mixed in the' Hack Hurdles and tho way the. betting fluctuated . caused■". the public. to think hard. There were only'four runners, as Master. Lothe : was scratched. At : the start The Native opened ujp favourite,;." but big money;soon came tor Te Whetu, who took the ; ;tavourite's place.,. The -Worry gelding /drifted . badlv and. his backers became uneasy and invested "savers" on To Whetu, At the start The: Native ■was left several lengths, but with Mill a mile covered ;he was alongside Te in..front.■".-.At'/the; top of' tho course he lost his position' and dropped into the rear.. Up to /this point the pace had been slow, but.- Waikarnka then shot out and he'was. leading'-.by' five lengths at the-6-furlong post/The next fence nearly, brousht him down, and Kotare. making a big jump, took charge from ,Te Whetu. /Cries of "Tho, favourite's beaten!",' were heard on all sides,.and at the'last'fence'.' it .looked any, odds-on -Kotare,; but The Native^then, appeared on tho jfcene,, and with; an electrical rush he .flew "past everything. ?.Ih the last stride he not; up in time to./win".by..aS:head, but though the/finish/was an extremely .close /one, there was an entire .absence ,of cheering., Julian, rider' of Kotare, was undoubtedly' caught napping,/ or The Native; would have;beenjjin.second -place. There were/no defections from the Higgle Handicap' field. Glcmora and Sir Ajitrim/looked all the'-better ,for. their : races_ the first, day, sai did Lady Medallist, , who is not by any means a picture at any' time..; The public plunged.heavily on tho; .Porirua.niare,;and ehe started favourite. The/start, was a-good- one.;' At;the en-' trance, to ;the : straight Lady Medallist and Sir Antrim_.;were in-.the dead, with'-..-• the field bunched; Passfncr the. stand the same-order-was maintained,' but shortly after»wards;. Wjmmera /displaced' Sir Antrim, and joined: tady/-Medallist-in the 'lead. At ;the ; half-mile 'Clemora, was/; running alongside Sir' Antrim, just ahead of Coronetted.and Tiptoe,- Across/the bottom the favourite shook off. Wimro'cra,/but;at the straight entrance; the field ; was bunched. Hard, ridden, Lady -Medallist .won all" out ; : by 'a'length, from Tiptoe and Coronetted. Wimniera '~ was "fourth. v, First Battery scored' a-popular win. in. ;the\;Motoa Handicap for.' the Trentham owner,-W.'Davies. !
