The men are named William Newton and Alfred Prior. < On land they are fighters by choice, and, when there is nothing doing in .professional pugilism, they, work their.passages 'to different countries as steamer firemen.. They came from America by • the Manuka a month ago. 'When in the Dominion they masqueraded under the names of "W. Burke and M'Guire. . It would seem from statements made to, the detectives, that Newton and Prior left the Manuka at Wellington, and went to Westport, staying there for a week. ; During that week, , it is. alleged, . they broke .into Freeman's and Jacobs's jewellery shops, and stole, jewellery valued at £10 ana £150 respectively.; Some of ,it (it is further alleged) they, sold', and :■ some they cast' away. They then went to Greymouth, where, it is alleged, _ they broke into' Lloyd's shop, stealing jewellery, valued at £300. : ■

They interyiewed ' one of them (then known as' Burke), and as. a result a large collection, of jewellery was found in his box. : "Burke," or, Newton, was arrested there and then, and Prior was arrested at 6:45 a.m., Prior has' made statements to the' : .ipfficers in which he .admits three .robberies . on . the . ;..West Coast.
